  • Abstract:

This design research project will take place on Naushon Island, a privately owned part of the Elizabeth Islands off of Woods Hole. Given the complexity of access, we wish to use the Harvard Forest as a preliminary test site for drone image capture of densely forested areas *before* multiple site visits to Naushon Island in July and September.

The research is being conducted in conjunction with a GSD seminar. The project will consider the relationship of the technical image—captured with the intent of reproducibility and circulation—to the specific disciplinary history in landscape architecture of scenario planning and alternative futures. Naushon Island, off the coast of southeastern Massachusetts, will serve as a test site. The seminar will explore remote sensing and imaging technologies at various scales to gather data and identify areas for field study. New techniques of digital representation—in particular, software for modeling vegetation—will be used to produce visualizations of the landscape in relation to the projected effects of action or inaction in the face of climate change.
