  • Abstract:

In 2004, the major accomplishment for this study was the publication of a special issue of Forest Ecology and Management, Volume 196. The issue contained 12 papers, all of which were results from different studies and measurements done on the plots during the first 15 years of the experimental manipulation. Although many authors were those who had worked on this project previously, there were a number of new collaborators as well. In 2004 we continued the fertilizer applications and monthly lysimeter collections. In addition, new tension lysimeters were installed at 60cm in all plots. The new lysimeters are larger in diameter and should yield a greater sample volume than the type installed in 1988. Over the duration of the experiment, we have increased the desired number of analyses on soil water and have not had enough sample volume to complete all of them. Both the old and new lysimeters will be collected for the entire 2005 season, following which the old lysimeters will be abandoned. Our next intensive sampling year is schedule for 2005 when we will collect fresh foliage and measure tree diameter growth in addition to the regular monthly samplings.
