Quantifying rates of land use and land cover change matters because of its far-reaching effects on biodiversity loss and climate change. The New England Landscape Futures Project (NELF) brought together researchers as well as land use and conservation practitioners to co-develop scenarios of potential futures in New England based on different visions of how land use might change from 2010 to 2060. Since we now have land-use data from 2020, this study reviews the differences between the 2020 NELF simulations and the 2020 observed data. I investigated the extent to which observed changes in specifically development and conservation from 2010 to 2020 align with the NELF scenarios by using total disagreement, a local Moran’s I test, and the absolute difference between the simulated maps and observed data. I found that the "Go It Alone" scenario matched closest for rates and placement of conservation, whereas the "Connected Communities" scenario was closer in matching placement of development. It was difficult comparing new development because of differences in classification in the land use database for NELF compared to the classification system I used. Additionally, the NELF scenarios overestimated the correct amount of conservation due to large sections of Maine receiving conservation in the reference period of 1990-2010, but much less between 2010-2020. This study shows that development has become more clustered and that there is less conservation compared to recent trends.
