This project will compare leaf morphological traits vertically through the canopies of mature trees at the Harvard Forest in summer 2026. I will measure leaves at intervals through the canopies of six species to compare morphological plasticity within individuals and between species in relation to height, light, and microclimate. I will also compare leaf traits from mature trees with leaf traits of seedlings of the same species to account for the effects of ontogeny on leaf form and function. This work will uncover the environmental drivers of intracanopy plasticity in leaf traits and will compare the varying capacities for morphological plasticity between tree species.
