The objective of this study is to characterize the geographic variation in reactive nitrogen gas emissions (HONO, NO, and N2O) from soils collected from across North America. The approach will be to measure microbial soil emissions of these gases from intact soil cores collected from all the major biomes within NEON’s North American core sites. A total of ten soil cores (5 cm dia x 10 cm deep, ~300 g per core) will be collected from this site. Seven cores will be collected as part of NEON’s soil data product protocol DP1.10086.001. Three of the samples will be collected near to where the MONet project (EMSL) has previously collected its cores. Please note that all work will be done by NEON staff and all sampling will be done within the boundaries of existing NEON plots. This work is part of a NEON Assignable Asset Request 2022-085 and is funded by the National Science Foundation.
