  • Abstract:

    We are interested in how soil respiration from different soil depths respond to warming and nitrogen additions. We are interested in total CO2 production from each depth, but also investigating how the sources of CO2 change seasonally using respiration quotients. We are working in Serita Frey's SWaN plots to measure soil air from the organic horizon and 0-10, 10-30, and 30-50 cm depths of the mineral soil in warmed, N addition, and control plots, using "permanently" installed stainless steel gas wells. We will also measure surface fluxes to help constrain the CO2 production by depth calculations. In 2020, we added IRIS probes (Indicators of Redox in Soils) to the plots to help explain the respiration quotient data we are getting during winter thaw events. Our next step is to perform sequential mineral extractions on soils from the SWaN plots to see how the potential of soil minerals to sorb carbon has changed over time.
