• Abstract:

  The Harvard Forest Field Wireless network (HFFW) provides high-speed Internet access to research sites across the 400-ha Prospect Hill Tract. The HFFW is implemented as an extension of the Harvard University Network. It utilizes unlicensed radios in three parts:(1) A high-speed backhaul network of 5.8 GHz radios uses above-canopy line-of-sight connections between towers. (2) A distributing network of 900 MHz radios extends out from the towers and through the canopy to surrounding sites at distances of 400 m or more. (3) Wi-Fi access points (2.4 GHz) at selected sites provide network access for computers and sensors within 50-100 m. The HFFW is designed and managed through a partnership between the Forest and Harvard Network Operations.
