Harvard Forest Symposium Abstract 2009

  • Title: Harvard Forest Archives Digitization

  • Abstract:

For nearly a century, detailed records for all research and forestry operations on the Harvard Forest properties have been maintained in the form of extensive research files, maps, photographs, and other materials. This information allows researchers to interpret the landscape history of research sites, and analyze how past natural and anthropogenic factors influence current ecological patterns. Since 2007, we have made a concerted effort to increase the accessibility of these resources. With a grant from the Harvard University Library Digital Initiative, we have successfully made available all the Stand Records and Forest Inventories. http://harvardforest.fas.harvard.edu/neces/i-resources.html. In addition, we have digitized and cataloged hundreds of photos, negatives and lantern slides. These can be accessed through the Harvard University Library, Visual Information Access (VIA) service. http://via.lib.harvard.edu/via/deliver/advancedsearch?_collection=via. You can browse this catalog by repository (Harvard Forest) and keyword.

We foresee these materials being used by many different audiences, including: Harvard classes, seminars, visiting researchers, outside collaborators and institutions interested in forest and landscape history.
