Harvard Forest Symposium Abstract 2011

  • Title: Prospect Hill Hydrological Stations

  • Abstract:

A network of hydrological stations on the Prospect Hill Tract measures surface discharge and water temperature of two small headwater streams, Nelson Brook (Millers River watershed) and Bigelow Brook (Swift River watershed), as well as water level and water temperature in two large associated wetlands (Black Gum Swamp and Beaver Swamp). Fifteen-minute data are collected every 1-2 weeks, analyzed, and posted on the Harvard Forest website. For additional details and data, please see the online Data Archive (dataset HF070).

Water storage in snowpack is a key factor in the hydrological cycle of central New England. The Harvard Forest snow pillow provides continuous long-term measurements of the water content of snowpack (snow water equivalent) during the winter months. The snow pillow is located in a mature mixed hardwood stand with scattered conifers about 50 m north of the Nelson Brook Big Weir. Fifteen-minute data are collected every 1-2 weeks during the winter months, analyzed, and posted on the Harvard Forest website. For additional details and data, please see the online Data Archive (dataset HF155).

Plans for 2011-12 include the extension of line power to all stations (in conjunction with electrical upgrades for NEON) and the addition of all stations to the Field Wireless Network for real-time data collection.
